Frequently asked questions
(and their answers)

  • Use of the telephone:
Your Au-pair would like to use the telephone and you have no objections? What to do when the Au-pair uses the telephone too much? Clarify at the beginning of the stay how much and when the Au-pair may use the telephone. You should also consider whether your Au-pair is allowed to or should answer the telephone.

  • Use of the family car:
Should your Au-pair come from the EU and be in possession of an international driving licence then it can use the family car at any time. In order not to experience any surprises, you should definitely clarify details with your insurance company. Please note that the agency cannot provide legal advice.

  • Taking the Au-pair on holiday:
It's a great if your Au-pair wishes to join you on holiday. If you take him/ her with you as an Au-pair then the same working hours as at home are valid. Please be aware: If you travel into a country which participates in the Schengen Treaty then there are no problems with visas. However, if you wish to travel into another country (eg. Switzerland) then you should definitely check with the respective Consulate/ Embassy.

  • Extension of the Au-pair contract:
In general: If your Au-pair contract is for less than 12 months, then it can be extended up to a maximum of 12 months in total. A longer stay is generally not possible.

  • We are not seeing eye to eye with our Au-pair:
If initial problems in the interpersonal communication continue and if the Au-pair and family do not find a way to solve their differences then a solution must be found as soon as possible in order not to cause unnecessary stress. Call the agency and we will seek a way out (and no doubt find one).
